R855-UM Type C is pilot's emergency radio developed sometime in 1970s. To operate, it must be connected to
"Priboi" type battery. Radio has it's own built-in speaker and microphon, but could also be connected to
helmet's communication system. For easy detection, radio's body is colored into the bright yellow color.
R655-UM Type C radio can be operated in 3 different modes - incoming, outgoing and tone. To operate in
either of the first two modes, pilot should press the appropriet button; to operate in the third mode "tone"
pilot should simultaneously press press buttons for incoming and outgoing modes. In "tone" mode, R855-UM
radio starts continously send out signals which are used by rescue team to locate the pilot.
As noted above, radio station has 2 buttons (for incominf and outgoing modes). It also has a switch which is
used to fixate either (or both) of the above buttons in the down position - allowing pilot to operate in either
mode without holding down the buttons.
