Realizing the need for a helmet that has built-in communication equipment, Soviets started designing
new helmet in late 1940s. By 1950 helmet was completed and was introduced into the mass production
as ShL-50. ShL-50 is the abbreviation for Shlem Letnii-50 - Flying Helmet-50, where 50 most probably
is the year when it was designed.
ShL-50 was made out of high quality soft black leather and built-in earphones, which were covered
with rubber pads on the outside and soft leather pads on the inside. Two wires exit helmet on the
back, one of them connects to the throat microphone and the other one connects to the aircraft
communication systems. Early ShL-50 helmet did not have mask hooks that are found on the later
models - at the time of its introduction Soviet primary oxygen mask was KM-15 that was worn with
simple straps placed over the head. As later type oxygen masks started to appear many ShL-50s were
equipped with the hooks - either round or like those found on ShL-61 helmets.
Along with ShL-50, two of its modifications were produced - ShZ-50 and ShLO-50. ShZ-50 is a
winter version of the ShL-50 and has fur attached to the inside of the helmet. ShLO-50 is a tropical
version and has the top part of the helmet made out of mesh instead of the leather. Other then that,
both ShZ-50 and ShLO-50 are identical to the original production helmet.
Please note, ShL-50 series of helmets have an ID tag (located on the back on the inside back) that
does not state model of the helmet, only year of its production - this is your primary clue to
identifying ShL-50 type of helmets.

| Right view of the ShZ-50 helmet with old style pilot goggles. |
|
| View on the ShZ-50 helmet from above. Note the hook - it's straight and was probably used only
to adjust helmet on the head. |
|
| ShZ-50 from the back - it's hard to see, but notice two wires coming out of the helmet. |
|
| Front view of the ShZ-50. Front wire is to be connected to the plane, back is for throat microphone. |
|
| ID tag of the ShZ-50. It's hard to read due to its age, but it's possible to distinguish that
this helmet was made in 1957. ID tag also has the name of the factory, but I could not distinguish some of the letters there. |

| This is a modified ShL-50 helmet with special straps and hooks for masks like KM-30. |
|
| There are two straps on each side - one on the bottom and another one on top. Each strap has
hooks attached to it on both ends (4 hooks all together). |
|
| Back of the helmet - note the horizontal straps for oxygen mask. This helmet is missing
communication wires on the back of the helmet and will need to be restored. |

pilot goggles. |
